The parliament of Kyrgyzstan elected Zhontoro Satybaldiyev as the country’s new prime minister with a majority of votes on Wednesday.
The parliament also approved the new cabinet proposed by Satybaldiyev, a former head of the presidential administration.
Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev dismissed the government on August 24, following the break-up of the majority coalition in parliament, and entrusted the Social-Democratic Party with forming a new coalition.
Kyrgyzstan is a parliamentary republic led by the Prime Minister, nominated by coalitions with a parliamentary majority. Factions join coalitions to form a coalition majority government. Following the 2010 elections, five parties were elected to the parliament, four of which - the Social-Democratic party, Ata Meken, Respublika and Ar Namys - formed a coalition, with the Ata Zhurt party in opposition.
By law, if a coalition breaks up, the Prime Minister has to resign and a new government be formed.
