Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, the special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, visited a camp for Syrian refugees in Iraq on Saturday, the CNN television network reported on Sunday.
Jolie also met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in Baghdad to discuss the conditions in the camps and the Iraqi government’s efforts to meet the daily needs of the refugees, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Iraq currently hosts 21,000 refugees who have fled the fighting in Syria. Most are in Iraq’s western Anbar province and northern Duhok province.
In addition, about 31,000 Iraqi nationals who had been living in Syria have returned to Iraq since the fighting began, Zebari said.
Earlier this week, Jolie also visited camps for Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
The rebellion against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which began over 18 months ago, has resulted in the deaths of more than 20,000 people, according to UN information.
