President of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was hospitalized after sustaining a gun wound in the country’s capital of Nouakchott, the Saudi-owned news channel Al Arabiya reported on Sunday.
According to Al Arabiya, the president was lightly wounded in the neck as his convoy was returning back from his farm in the north of the country to Nouakchott.
Reuters reported citing sources in the presidential staff and military that Abdel Aziz was shot accidentally by a military patrol, which did not recognize the presidential convoy.
Abdel Aziz was elected the president of Mauritania in 2009. Before that he was the president of the High Council of State after he toppled ex-president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in 2008 military coup.
