A Russian female tourist died under the wheels of a truck trying to save the life of her one-and-a-half-year-old baby in a road accident in Thailand, the Russian embassy said on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred late on Friday in the resort city of Pattaya in the south-east of Thailand where a 30-year-old Russian female tourist was vacationing with her husband and two children.

When the family was buying fruits in a roadside stall, the little girl ran out onto the road. The mother rushed after the girl when she saw an approaching truck.

“The woman managed to pull the girl out from the wheels of the truck but died herself on the spot. The girl is currently in hospital with a head injury,” Andrei Dvornikov, head of the consulate department of Russia’s embassy in Thailand, told RIA Novosti.

The girl’s condition is stable and not life-threatening, he added.

“Doctors say the girl may be released from hospital in 10-12 days and will be ready for the flight home,” he said.

The truck driver did not escape from the scene of the accident and surrendered to the local police.
