Over 100 people were injured as police in Kuwait broke up on Sunday night a rally of tens of thousands of people protesting electoral law changes that the opposition claimed were a constitutional coup by the government, Iranian state-owned news network Press TV reported.

"The number of wounded protesters in hospital has exceeded 100 after riot police attacked them," the network quoted Mohammad al-Humaidi, director of the Kuwait Society for Human Rights, as saying.

Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades, and used billies to disperse protesters across the capital, Kuwait City. Medics said dozens of protesters had been hospitalized.

The Interior Ministry reported that demonstrators threw rocks at police officers, injuring eleven of them.

Activists said more than 100,000 people attended Sunday’s demonstration.

The opposition called for the rally after an announcement by the government last week that elections will be held on December 1 and the electoral law will be changed "to preserve national unity." The opposition said the change is aimed at electing a rubberstamp parliament.
