BELGRADE, November 12 (RIA Novosti) - Former Slovenian prime minister Borut Pahor leads Sunday’s presidential race, getting 40 percent of the vote, Slovenia’s election authority said.

With 99.9 percent of ballots counted, Pahor scores 40 percent, followed by incumbent president Danilo Turk with 35.8 percent. European Parliament member and center-right politician Milan Zver was third, with almost 21.2 percent.

The results are considered preliminary. Final results will be declared after the Central Election Commission gets the results from polling stations abroad.

The turnout was about 47.7 percent of 1.7 million registered voters, the lowest since the country declared independence in 1991.

If no candidate wins an outright majority of 50 percent plus one vote, the runoff will be held on December 2.

Turk was expected to be the frontrunner of the polls, but his approval rating started to fall several days before the vote.

Speaking at his campaign headquarters late on Sunday, Turk recalled that he was the runner-up in the first round of the 2007 elections, but snatched the victory in the runoff.

Ex-premier Pahor thanked his election team and supporters for their confidence in him and pledged to “exceed” their expectations after his final victory.

Chosen for a five-year term, the president is a largely ceremonial post in Slovenia. He, however, is a commander-in-chief of the army and the one who proposes candidates to head the national bank.
