WASHINGTON, November 14 (RIA Novosti) - Former American spy chief David Petraeus will testify before the US Congress about the deadly attack on an American embassy compound in Libya, just days after he stepped down as head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) over an extramarital affair, US media cited sources as saying Wednesday.
Petraeus has agreed to testify before a closed-door Congressional session Thursday about the Sept. 11 attack by militants on the embassy compound in Benghazi that left four US diplomats dead, including the American ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, ABC News cited the sources as saying.
The announcement came less than a week after Petraeus stepped down as head of the CIA following revelations that he engaged in an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.
Speculation had coursed through swathes of the US media that his resignation might allow him to avoid testifying on the Benghazi attack before American lawmakers. Both Republican and Democratic members of Congress, however, insisted that Petraeus would give testimony, either voluntarily or involuntarily, through a subpoena.
Petraeus’ affair with Broadwell has also ensnared Gen. John Allen, the top American commander in Afghanistan.
Allen is being investigated for possible “inappropriate communications” with Florida socialite Jill Kelley, a friend of Petraeus’ who reportedly received harassing emails sent anonymously by Broadwell warning her to stay away from the former CIA chief.
