MOSCOW, December 15 (RIA Novosti) – An attack on an airport in the Pakistani city of Peshawar left at least 11 dead from heavy gun- and rocket fire on Saturday, a local source told RIA Novosti.

The attackers fired several rockets at the premises of the Bacha Khan International Airport and then rammed the wall around the airport with a car laden with explosives, a local doctor said.

They then started a gun battle with airport security forces, he said. Regional media reported that some of the rockets landed in the nearby University Town area, the doctor said.

Five militants and six civilians were killed in the gunfight, and 42 were injured, said the medic, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to press.

The assault came from the tribal area on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, reports said. Much of the zone is controlled by the radical Taliban movement, which was behind a similar attack at the airport of Jalalabad in August, when five Taliban fighters and five security troops were killed.
Peshawar has a population of 3.6 million and is located in the country’s northwest.
