MOSCOW, December 28 (RIA Novosti) - Egypt’s top prosecutor ordered an investigation on Thursday into allegations that opposition leaders committed treason by planning protests to overthrow President Mohammed Morsi, Al Arabiya reported.

The probe by a Morsi-appointed prosecutor targets opposition leaders Mohammed El Baradei, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a Nobel Peace laureate, former Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, and Hamdeen Sabahi.

Emad Abu Ghazi, the secretary general of El Baradei’s political party, said the probe, which comes several days after the all-nation referendum on the new Constitution, is “an indication of a tendency towards a police state and an attempt to eliminate political opponents.”

Both El Baradei and Sabahi were running against Morsi in the presidential election earlier in the year.

A wave of opposition rallies broke out after Morsi, Egypt’s first elected president, issued last month a series of controversial decrees that granted him and the Islamist-led panel, that was drafting the Constitution, immunity from the judicial oversight.

In one of the rallies earlier in the month, protesters gathered outside Morsi’s palace chanting ‘Leave,’ which was a common slogan used last year in a popular uprising against ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
