MOSCOW, January 4 (RIA Novosti) – U.S. personnel and equipment has began arriving at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey to support NATO’s Patriot battery deployment in response to alleged security threats from Syria, the U.S. European Command said on Friday.
Some 400 U.S. personnel and equipment will continue to flow into southern Turkey over the next several days by U.S. military airlift, according to the Eucom, based in the southwestern German city of Stuttgart.
“Additional equipment will be moved by sea, arriving later this month,” the Eucom statement said.
Six Patriot battery units, including two each from Germany and the Netherlands, are scheduled to be installed in Turkey by the end of this month.
NATO approved the Patriot batteries deployment last month after a request filed by Turkey. Russia has repeatedly protested the deployment warning that it would mean the direct involvement of NATO forces in the Syrian conflict, further undermining the already unstable situation in the region.
Turkey maintains that it needs the batteries to shore up security on its 900-kilometer (560 mile) border with Syria. Damascus is believed to have several hundred surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads.
The duration of the deployment will be determined by the contributing nations in coordination with Turkey and NATO, the Eucom said.
Tensions between Turkey and Syria flared dangerously this summer after Damascus shot down a Turkish fighter that had violated its airspace. Turkey threatened retaliation if there was any repeat of the incident, although it admitted the plane had mistakenly strayed slightly into Syria.

- jgTurkey is a long standing member of NATO01:41, 05/01/2013"Russia has repeatedly protested the deployment warning that it would mean the direct involvement of NATO forces in the Syrian conflict..."
Syria involved NATO when first they shot down a Turkish jet and then when they fired shells into Turkey, killing a number of Turkish civilians. Like any other NATO member, Turkey is entitled to request assistance from other NATO members.
I don't see why Russia is so upset - they don't share a border with Syria and are not involved. The Patriots are air defence systems which will help protect Turkey's southern border and Turkish air space from any more ordnance fired into Turkey from Syria.- bielecig, stop trying to BS us12:27, 06/01/2013No surprise here. This is not your first attempt to sell Western propaganda on this forum.
Both sides admitted that the Turkish plane entered Syrian territorial waters and was approaching the Aleppo area where a high concentration of so called rebels operated at that time. Most likely, it was testing Syrian air defences and attempting to drop weapons and other supplies for the rebels.
You cannot isolate this strategy - Syria had a good reason to be defensive. A similar NATO strategy in Libya had ended in crimes against peace and war crimes committed by NATO, as well as in loss of Libya's independence and the murder of Muammar Gaddafi.
From the very beginning, Turkey had supported the terrorists, the death squads, and the foreign mercenaries who commit atrocities in Syria in order to destabilize the country. Syria is under attack and Turkey is one of the main aggressors. Your arguments are ridiculous - you are trying to reverse the picture and present Turkey as a victim. This is totally opposite to what is really happening in this conflict.
- bielecIt's time to accept the reality04:43, 05/01/2013It is ridiculous that Turkey, the perpetrator, instigator, and supporter of foreign terrorist attempting to destabilize Syria, the mad dog on NATO’s leash, is now playing a victim that needs protection against alleged threats from Syria. It sounds to me like Israel's right to defend itself as an illegal occupier. All the same hypocrisy used to cover up real, criminal goals.
This NATO move is not a coincident. It is a part of a larger plan in preparation to conquer Syria and Iran, to steal their natural resources, to secure Israel's illegal expansion, and to neutralise Russia in case of an armed conflict in the region.
This move means that NATO goes ahead with their plan regardless of international opposition. This means that NATO decided to act as a bully. In the meantime, China is neutralized by being dragged into a proxy conflict with Japan.
I am afraid that Russia and China have to prepare for some real action in order to stop the creeping of NATO's military towards their borders - just like the US did during the Cuban crisis in 1962. Russia and China also need to show to their allies that they are able and willing to defend them from foreign aggression.
It's time to accept the truth - NATO will not stop unless they are forced to stop. And it is in Russia's vital interest to do so. Or else, Russia will be next. - bielec It's time to accept the reality04:47, 05/01/2013It is ridiculous that Turkey, the perpetrator, instigator, and supporter of foreign terrorists attempting to destabilize Syria, the mad dog on NATO’s leash, is now playing a victim that needs protection against alleged threats from Syria. The article also said, "But with experts concluding that the aircraft probably crashed due to human error after the pilots failed successively to perform an evasive manoeuvre, it seemed likely that Turkey would still continue to blame the loss of the plane on Syria." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/9396161/Syria-Turkey-jet-crash-may-have-been-accident.html
I guess the super-rich "elite" on both sides spin stories to try to get us sheeple to agree to whatever they want to do. Sadly no matter what happens we die in their wars, and work longer hours while they get richer.
