MOSCOW, January 24 (RIA Novosti) - North Korea is preparing for a nuclear test that may target the US, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported on Thursday, citing a statement by the North’s top military body.

"In the new phase of our century-long struggle against the United States, we do not hide the fact that various satellites, long-range missiles that we will continue to launch and high-level nuclear test we will conduct will target our sworn enemy, the United States," North Korea's National Defense Commission said in a statement published by the state Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

A South Korean intelligence source earlier told Yonhap that the North "has completed technical preparations” for its third nuclear test and can conduct it “in a few days" if North Korean leader Kim Jong-un makes a political decision.

The communist state’s foreign ministry vowed on Wednesday to strengthen the country’s military capabilities and step up its controversial nuclear program shortly after the UN Security Council slapped new sanctions on the country over the December rocket launch. Pyongyang also pledged to end any efforts at denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and to withdraw from six-party talks.

I take it that this means the North Koreans no longer need all that US aid. Perhaps I have it the wrong way around and this is another blackmail move to get even more aid from the USA and South Korea. Perhaps the USA and South Korea should take a different approach and stop all aid to NK and tell them to get it all from China instead.

Why can't NK say when they want more or less handouts, instead of making threats?

Anyway, congratulations NK. You have now given the USA an excuse to increase their forces (conventional and nuclear) in that region and have probably placed yourselves on the target lists of all the nuclear armed countries (even those who you currently consider to be friends).
