MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) – At least 80 people have been killed and another 800 injured after a multi-storey building collapsed in Bangladesh, local media said on Wednesday.

A total of 76 bodies have been recovered so far from the debris of the nine-storey Rana Plaza in Savar, near Dhaka, which collapsed at around 9 a.m. local time (3 a.m. GMT), triggering panic.

The death toll is one of the worst involving building collapses in Bangladesh, and could rise further, with hundreds of people still trapped under the debris, bdnews24 reported.

On Tuesday, four garments factories and a bank branch located in Rana Plaza were closed after cracks appeared in the building’s wall. However, some workers returned to the factories on Wednesday before the collapse.

Thousands of local people have joined the rescue effort, disrupting the traffic on a highway near Rana Plaza. Four army teams have also joined the rescue operation.
