MOSCOW, May 6 (RIA Novosti) - Members of the General National Congress (GNC) of Libya passed on Sunday a law banning anyone who used to hold a senior position under former leader Muammar Gaddafi from working in the government’s administration, Al Arabiya reported.

The newly passed legislature, called the ‘Political Isolation Law,’ could force current Prime Minister Ali Zeidan to step down from his post, Al Arabiya reported.

Zeidan served as a diplomat under Gaddafi before he defected in 1980 and joined the opposition. According to Al Arabiya, the wording of the document does not make it clear “whether or not he was senior enough to be barred from the new government.”

FoxNews.com reported that Zeidan was not the only official, who might be subjected to the new law, as many other officials fit criteria stipulated by the document, including president of the GNC, Mohamed Magarief.

Gaddafi’s regime was overthrown in October 2011 by opposition forces with NATO’s assistance after a seven-month civil war. Gaddafi, who had ruled the country for almost 42 years, was captured and killed by rebels near his home town of Sirte on October 20.
