A total of 87 dead bodies have so far been removed from the wreckage of the Polish president's plane, which crashed near the west Russian city of Smolensk on Saturday, Poland's prosecutor general said on Monday.

"At the moment, 87 dead bodies have been recovered at the site of the tragedy. The remaining [bodies] will be removed when the plane wreckage's is lifted by a crane. Then, we hope, more remains will be found and sent to Moscow for identification," Andrzej Seremet said.

The Soviet-made TU-154 carrying President Lech Kaczynski hit the top of trees as it attempted to land in thick fog on Saturday morning, killing all 96 people on board the plane.

Bodies and body fragments have been sent to Moscow. Forensic experts say DNA identification procedures will take some four days.
