MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - Archeologists in Rome said they have unearthed the place where the cruel dictator Emperor Caligula may have been killed, local media said on Friday.

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, dubbed Caligula (Little Boots), was the third emperor of the Roman Empire and gained notoriety for his cruelty and insanity. He was assassinated in a conspiracy involving his own bodyguard and members of the Roman senate.

Italian archeologists said they discovered a hidden narrow underground passageway beneath the imperial palaces on the Palatine Hill, which matched the place where the emperor was believed to have been stabbed to death.

The emperor's body was burned and his ashes entombed by his sisters within the Mausoleum of Augustus on the River Tiber. Caligula's assassins also murdered his wife and daughter.

The archeologists also discovered a sculpture of a tiger and a man, two wings and a female head made of marble at the site.
