TEHRAN, January 25 (RIA Novosti) - Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will arrive in Tehran in February to discuss Iran's controversial nuclear program, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.

Schroeder's trip was approved by the German Foreign Ministry and also follows consultations with the new U.S. administration led by Barack Obama, IRNA said, referring to German mass media.

At the same time, IRNA did not give the exact date of the visit.

Obama, who was inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States on Tuesday, earlier said Iran would be a priority issue in U.S. foreign policy and that Washington needed to start interaction with the Islamic Republic.

Tehran is under three sets of relatively mild UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to suspend its nuclear program, which many Western powers led by the United States say is a covert nuclear weapons program, a claim that Iran has dismissed.
