UN reformation ought to be in line with member-countries' opinion

ROME, June 7 (RIA Novosti) - Such issues as UN reforming and the expansion of the Security Council membership should be decided by wide consensus of the member countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday at a Rome press-conference following talks with his Italian counterpart Gianfranco Fini.

"The pace of the reforms is not the main headache. This problem is due to be settled by general agreement, which has not been available so far," said Lavrov. "What matters above all is to retain the legitimacy, activity and efficiency of the organization, above all the Security Council."

"There is no way enhancing the UN's effectiveness without wide accord. In this context, Russia is prepared to support any choice made on the basis of general consensus of the member countries," said the Russian minister.

He argues the UN reforms should not be restricted to widening the Security Council only - rather they ought to pursue the aims of raising the effectiveness of the organization and encouraging response to the challenges and threats of the modern world, such as disintegration of states, violation of human rights and conflicts on ethnic and religious grounds.
