Most Russians believe the next national elections will be unfair - poll

MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - Most Russians believe the forthcoming parliamentary and presidential elections will be unfair - the Public Opinion Foundation reported.

The national poll carried out by the foundation revealed that 51% of Russians think the next parliamentary elections will be unfair, while 23% think they will be fair. With respect to the presidential election, 44% are optimistic that it will be fair, whereas 41% are not.

Of the respondents, 65% intend to vote in the parliamentary elections in 2007 and 73% plan to vote in the presidential election in 2008.

The recent revolutions in former Soviet republics took place against the background of parliamentary or presidential elections. The results of these elections were disputed by opposition parties and were later reversed. When asked whether the same thing could happen in Russia, 42% said it could and 39% said it could not.

A total of 1,500 people were interviewed on July 9-10 in 100 communities in 44 Russian regions, territories and republics. An additional 600 respondents were polled in Moscow. The statistical error rate was no more than 3.6%.
