Military cooperation with Russia key to Belarusian security

MINSK, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - Military cooperation with Russia plays a crucial role in Belarusian national security, a Belarusian defense ministry official said Monday.

Colonel Alexander Korbut, the head of the ministry's international military cooperation department, says bilateral military cooperation is maintained via the Union State agreement and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

"It includes cooperation on the rapprochement and unification of the Russian and Belarusian military legislations, implementation of international monitoring agreements, military-scientific activities, personnel training and military and technical cooperation," Korbut said.

He says the sides assign priority to join combat training and command post and air defense exercises.

Korbut also said Belarus was proactively cooperating with NATO as part of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and Partnership for Peace program.

In 2004, Belarus joined the NATO program for the planning and appraisal of forces, which was needed for the country's participation in multinational exercises, search-and-rescue and humanitarian operations.
