KALININGRAD, August 20 (RIA Novosti) - A squadron of battleships of the Baltic and Northern Fleets will head for the Atlantic Ocean Saturday. The squadron comprises the Neustrashimy and Pylky patrol ships and the Olekma tanker.
The vessels will practice combat tasks in the oceanic area remote from their bases (Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea and Severomorsk on the Barents Sea) for the first time in the past nine years, a spokesman for the Baltic Fleet said. "Admiral Mikhail Zakharenko, the Navy's deputy commander-in-chief, supervises the exercises of the two fleets," he added.
The Pylky and Olekma's previous campaign to the Mediterranean took place in 1996 and was dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy, the spokesman added.
"The vessels will visit Norwegian and German ports during the two-month campaign," he said.
