KAZAN, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - The CIS summit in Kazan, the capital of Russia's Volga republic of Tatarstan, has decided to improve and reform the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
The decision is designed to increase the efficiency of the CIS organization and its founding bodies, to overhaul its structure, and to reform its funding framework.
Following Russia's initiative, 2006 has been declared "the Year of the CIS."
CIS leaders also adopted a statement in view of the 60th anniversary of the UN and signed an agreement on humanitarian cooperation between member states.
The leaders adopted an address to the people of the CIS countries and the international community marking 20 years since the world's worst nuclear power accident in Chernobyl, Ukraine.
