MOSCOW, November 25 (RIA Novosti) - The share of currency under the "mattress" has been gradually decreasing in recent years, the chairman of the Central Bank of Russia said Friday.

"People are gradually taking their money from under their mattresses," Sergei Ignatyev said. "The Central Bank has witnessed this process since 2003."

"Nobody knows the exact figure of foreign currency people keep at home, but it is certainly not trillions, maybe $20-$30 billion. This figure decreases with each year," he said.

He added that there was also a tendency for decreasing in the amount of rubles people kept privately at home. People are depositing their money in banks, and to encourage this trend, it is necessary to improve the level of trust in the banking system, he said.
