Russia's arms exporter looks to lease military equipment

MOSCOW, December 6 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's state-owned arms export agency, Rosoboronexport, has proposed setting up a government corporation and passing a law to allow it to lease military equipment, a senior company official said Tuesday.

Alexei Alyoshin said Russia's military and technical cooperation with foreign countries had practically reached its limit. "As the volume of Russia's military and technical cooperation has reached a maximum figure ($5-$6 billion), it is necessary to look for new ways of cooperation," he said.

He said Russia should adopt a law to allow for the leasing of military equipment. This approach will be especially attractive to countries that do not have sufficient funds to purchase new armaments, he said.

Alyoshin said Rosoboronexport should acquire the status of a government corporation to effectively perform the functions of a state intermediary in arms sales.
