ATHENS, February 4 (RIA Novosti, Alexei Bogdanovsky) - Greek-Russian cooperation in the energy sector is of key importance for both countries, the Greek foreign minister said Saturday.

Petros Molyviatis said, "It is clear that Greek-Russian economic cooperation has exceptional potential for development. Greece aims to realize this potential in the best way possible, focusing on those sectors that present the greatest mutual interest."

The minister said the construction of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline from Bulgaria to Greece was of great importance for all sides involved.

The Russian, Bulgarian and Greek governments signed a memorandum on the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline construction in April 2005.

Molyviatis said talks with the head of Russian energy giant Gazprom Alexei Miller in Athens on February 2, during which the sides discussed Gazprom's potential involvement in the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline project and the possibility of transporting Russian gas via Greece, had been constructive.

The minister also cited construction, retail, and tourism as areas with strong potential for bilateral cooperation.
