MOSCOW, April 16 (RIA Novosti) - The working congress of Green Russia environmental party on Sunday decided to create its faction in the liberal Yabloko party.

The congress was held in the Moscow Region, with 74 delegates attending the forum.

"For Green Russia, this is a chance to stay in the political field and receive organizational support for creating a sovereign party of environmentalists," said academician Alexei Yablokov who is also chairman of the organizing committee of Green Russia.

According to Yablokov, the greens will keep their name and symbols in Yabloko. By today, Green Russia has established factions in 30 regional branches of Yabloko, he said.

Yabloko party leader Grigory Yavlinsky has welcomed the congress' decision, promising his support. He proposed that both parties should draft an environmental program to deal with control over spent nuclear fuel transportation, the privatization of water and forest natural resources, enhanced nuclear facility safety, urban environment and other issues.

The process of creating Green Russia started in 2005. Last December, the Justice Ministry of Russia registered the organizing committee for the establishment of the party. Green Russia says it has about 20,000 members.
