MOSCOW, July 31 (RIA Novosti) - Transaero, an independent Russian air carrier, said Monday its net profit had grown 780% year-on-year in the first half of 2006 to 238.05 million rubles (about $8.8 million).

Transaero, the first Russian operator to adopt Western jets in its fleet, said its sales proceeds had grown 52% in the reporting period to 5.84 billion rubles (about $216 million) and net profit had increased from 26.81 million rubles (about $993,00) in the first half of 2005 to 238.6 million rubles (about $8.8 million) in the first half of 2006.

Transaero also said it had carried 895,420 passengers in the reporting period, an increase of 44% compared with the first half of 2005.

The airline's freight traffic rose 55% to 339.6 million ton-kilometers.

Transaero also said it had carried out 6,535 flights in the first half of 2006, an increase of 14% on last year's figure.

Shareholders in the airline, which flies Boeing 747s out of Moscow's Domodedovo airport, voted in May in favor of holding an initial public offering within a year.
