MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will back any UN Security Council reform based on a broad consensus, the Russian Foreign Minister said Thursday.

"We are ready to support any variant of the UN Security Council reform based on the broad consent of member states," Sergei Lavrov said.

Lavrov also said Russia supports an Asian representative to be the next UN Secretary General.

"Russia stands by the agreed commitment that a representative of Asia will be Kofi Annan's successor," he said, adding that discussions on a candidacy are underway.

According to UN regulation, an Asian representative must be nominated to replace Africa's representative, Kofi Annan, when his second term in office expires December 31, 2006.

A list of Asian candidates includes South Korea's Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon, India's Shashi Tharoor, the UN Deputy Secretary General, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Sarakiart Sathirathai and Sri Lanka's presidential adviser and former UN disarmament official, Jayantha Dhanapala.
