Held every three years, the congress is promoted by the World Energy Council, a UN-accredited non governmental organization, which aims to foster economic development and the sustainable use of energy supplies.
Andrei Dementyev, Russian deputy minister of industry and energy, said the forum would be chaired by Italian Minister of Economic Development Pierluigi Bersani and attended by energy ministers from Algeria, Brazil, China, Qatar, Russia, the United States and the European Union.
It will focus on world energy problems not only from the industrial and economic point of view, but also considering the political and social aspects of problems resulting from global development.
Around 5,000 delegates from all over the world are expected to arrive at Rome's new exposition center, Nuova Fiera, where an exhibition fair will run parallel to the four-day meeting.
The exhibition will be attended by the heads of leading world energy companies, and representatives of state regulators, energy consumers, scientific research and environmental organizations from more than 90 nations.
The congress will feature special sessions on the prospects for world and regional energy development.
According to the Russian Ministry of Industry and Energy, a Russian special session entitled "Global Energy Security: the role of Russia" will address steady economic development and the maintenance of a safe global energy market, the reliability of hydrocarbon deliveries, the creation of a global energy infrastructure, innovations in the sphere of energy, and the development of renewable energy sources.
Russia will be represented by companies including Unified Energy System, Bashneft, Gazprom, Novatek, Power Machines, Russian Machines, Surgutneftegaz, Gazprombank, Technopromexport.
