Muscovites to suffer one week's fewer cold showers this summer

MOSCOW, March 3 (RIA Novosti) - Residents of Moscow got some good news on Tuesday when a senior city official announced that the annual hot water cut off would be reduced from three weeks to two this summer.

Hot water is pumped directly into residential buildings in Moscow, and the pipes are turned off every summer in staggered stages around the Russian capital in order for repair work to be carried out.

People in Europe's most populous city are then either forced to endure cold showers for three weeks, or boil water in kettles or other devices to heat up water for washing.

"We will turn the water off for 14 days instead of 21 in the summer," first deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov said. Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov said that the work would be carried out on time.
