Flights started to take off from Moscow airports on Sunday after their work was interrupted by a heavy smog from wildfires raging across central Russia due to abnormally hot weather, a spokesman for the country's aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, said.

In the last twenty-four hours, a total of 95,000 passengers have been able to fly from Moscow airports, Sergei Izvolsky said.

According to him, Sheremetyevo airport is working in the normal regime, allowing both takeoff and landing flights. The visibility at the airport is 500 meters, he said.

Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports are operating according to actual weather conditions, allowing flights to take off. A considerable number of flights were redirected to reserve airfields in other cities in central and western Russia, the spokesman said.

Wildfires continue to rage across much of the central part of European Russia as the country experiences an unprecedented heat wave, with temperatures of up to and above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
