A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit northeast Japan on Thursday and a tsunami warning was issued, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
It said the earthquake struck 40 kilometers under the seabed off the coast of Miyagi prefecture.
The tsunami was predicted to have a two-meter high wave.
The earthquake was about 120 km north of Fukushima. It was initially reported to have a magnitude of 7.4 but was later revised to 7.1, according to the USGS.
