Tokyo on Saturday announced its bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, NHK Television reported.
In the presence of the International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge and other guests, Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara said the Olympic Games will help Japan recover from the March 11th disaster and make it a better country.
Japan's Olympic Committee approved Tokyo's bid at a special meeting earlier in the day and is expected to file an application with the IOC.
Rome has already declared its candidacy for 2020, while Madrid is another likely candidate.
