Roberto Carlos on Tuesday announced a media boycott over interviews he says he never gave.

The Brazilian star, who is currently the player-manager of Russian Premier League club Anzhi Makhachkala, told RIA Novosti he was "taking a break" from speaking to the media due to a number of "fictitious interviews."

He didn't specify the media outlets concerned, but last month complained about an interview in the Spanish daily newspaper Marca that quoted him as saying various big names joining the Dagestan-based club, including England manager Fabio Capello, former Russia coach Guus Hiddink, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Chelsea's Frank Lampard, among others.

"Words are attributed to me about mythical new signings, whose names at times are a total surprise," Roberto Carlos said.

"Not in one interview did I utter any concrete names. ... From this moment, I am not giving any more interviews, to allow me to concentrate completely on my work as a coach at Anzhi."

Roberto Carlos joined Anzhi in February as part of billionaire owner Suleiman Kerimov's transformation of the obscure Caspian Sea club. Last month he was made player-coach after Kerimov fired the incumbent, Gadzhi Gadzhiev, over a string of poor results.
