MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) -- Nobody in Russia has yet contracted bird flu, the Federal Service for the Protection of Consumer Rights said Monday in a statement.

Medical personnel are continuing to monitor the situation in the Siberian regions affected by avian influenza, making daily rounds and checking local residents.

According to the Service, the outbreak caused by the H5N1 virus has not affected people, and no new cases in other regions have been registered.

The virus has affected only domestic fowl in private households. Owing to preventive measures taken in good time, no bird flu cases have been registered at poultry farms, the statement said.

Therefore, the Service said it considered a ban on sales of poultry and eggs imported from the Novosibirsk region, the Altai Territory and other regions affected by the outbreak to be unfounded.
