Russia's MTS buys 74.99% stake in N. Caucasus mobile operator

MOSCOW, July 17 (RIA Novosti) - MTS [RTS: MTSS], Russia's largest mobile phone operator, said Monday it had purchased a 74.99% share package in Dagtelecom LLC.

MTS struck a deal to purchase the mobile operator in the North Caucasian Republic of Daghestan Friday. The sum of the deal has not been disclosed.

MTS is majority-owned by AFK Sistema, one of Russia's largest diversified corporations with business ranging from banking to telecommunications (50.4%). Deutsche Telecom holds 25.15% of the company's stock through its subsidiary T-Mobile Worldwide Holding and 22.3% of MTS shares are in free float.

MTS shares are traded on the Moscow InterBank Currency Exchange (MICEX), on the New York Stock Exchange in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) and on the over-the-counter market in Europe in the form of Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs).
