ST. PETERSBURG, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Ford plans to assemble 25,000 new Mondeo cars annually at its Vsevolozhsk plant in northwestern Russia, a local government official said Tuesday.

The source said the issue had been discussed by Leningrad Region Governor Valery Serdyukov and James Tetreault, Vice President Manufacturing at Ford of Europe and Vice President at Ford Motor Company.

The third-generation Mondeo, which was officially unveiled in late 2006, boasts the latest solutions in aerodynamics, safety and cost effectiveness. The new medium-sized car is available in sedan, hatchback and station wagon modifications with nine options of gas and diesel engines. The 2007 Mondeo has been on sale in Europe and Russia since early this summer.

Ford plans to invest over $100 million in projects to increase the capacity and expand the car range at its Vsevolozhsk plant.

"There are plans to increase Focus output from 72,000 to 100,000 cars annually," the spokesman said. "In addition, the plant will assemble 25,000 new Mondeo cars a year."

Established in 2002, Ford Vsevolozhsk has so far produced Ford Focus cars in four modifications - station wagon, sedan, and five-door and three-door hatchbacks.
