MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's largest mining and metals company Mechel said on Thursday its coal output increased 54%, year-on-year, in January-September to 20.7 million metric tons.

Mechel, which unites producers of coal, iron ore, nickel, steel, and rolled products, said coking coal output grew almost twofold in the reporting period to 12.41 million metric tons and steam coal production climbed 17% to 8.29 million metric tons.

Rolled products output grew 11%, year-on-year, in January-September to 4.31 million metric tons, Mechel said.

"Mechel continues to implement its long term strategy of transitioning to the manufacturing of downstream products with high added value in its steel segment and increasing production efficiency in all of its business segments," Mechel CEO Vladimir Polin said, commenting on the company's results.
