Russia's gas giant Gazprom may use underground gas storage in Loenhout in Belgium, Gazprom said on Wednesday following a meeting between its CEO Alexei Miller and Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme.

The two sides discussed cooperation between Gazprom and Belgium's Fluxys gas transportation company, including possible supplies of Russian gas to Belgium and its transit to third countries.

"The parties noted the strong potential for long-term cooperation between Gazprom and Belgian energy companies to meet the increasing demand for natural gas on the European continent," Gazprom said.

Belgium imports all the gas it consumes - about 17 billion cubic meters. In 2009, Gazprom sold 3.3 bcm to Belgium.
