Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is ready to discuss the creation of a coalition government with the opposition, Greek television reported on Thursday.
However, the prime minister refuses to resign from his post, the report said.
The Greek opposition has called for the formation of an interim government to accept the new European bailout plan after Papandreou announced his surprise decision to hold a referendum to seek the nation’s approval of the new 130-billion-euro bailout program for Athens.
The announcement sparked strong criticism from eurozone leaders, who threatened to expel Greece from the currency union should the new aid plan be rejected in the referendum.
If Papandreou fails to agree with the opposition and create a coalition government, he will face a confidence vote in parliament on Friday.
