NEW DELHI, December 23 (RIA Novosti) – A journalist of a private TV channel was killed when police opened fire on protesters in Manipur, north-east India, local media said on Sunday citing officials.
Nanao Singh, 29, a reporter of the Prime Time channel was wounded in his chest when police opened fire to disperse a crowd of protesters.
The journalist died on the way to a hospital. His death provoked violence in different parts of Imphal valley in central Manipur, officials said.
Protesters have been gathering for a second day demanding the arrest of a militant for allegedly molesting Manipuri film actress Momoko at a musical concert.
The shooting came amid a wave of protests over a student's gang-rape in New Delhi last week.
At least 35 protesters were hurt when police targeted them with baton charge, water cannons and tear gas shells, The Hindu newspaper reported on Sunday.
