CHITA, December 26 (RIA Novosti) – Siberian borders guards detained a man at the Russian-Chinese checkpoint who was attempting to smuggle 12 kilos of gold dust into China, regional Border Guard Service spokeswoman Marina Kostyuchenkova said on Wednesday.

The man was detained at the Zabaikalsk checkpoint in the East Siberian Trans-Baikal Region. This was the largest amount of smuggled gold seized in the checkpoint’s history, she said.

“A package containing gold dust was found during joint border and customs inspection of a Toyota Hiace car heading for China from Russia,” she said.

“The package was under the seat of the driver - a Trans-Baikal Territory resident who did not even try to hide the precious metal,” she said.

The man detained gave no explanations for the smuggling attempt.

“A final conclusion on the gold content in the gold dust will be made after it has been examined by experts,” she said.
