The Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) proposed on Wednesday sending international police to stabilize the situation in Kyrgyzstan.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's special representative for Central Asia, Kimmo Kiljunen, said international police operations would be useful in the region for technical advice to create an "atmosphere of trust."
Kiljunen said that the planned forces would not include "peacekeepers in military terms," but should be seen as an "international police operation to offer technical advice."
He said 50-100 policemen would suffice to maintain security and help escort refugees back home.
UNICEF says over 100,000 refugees fled to neighboring Uzbekistan during the clashes, while the United Nations says around 400,000 have been displaced by the unrest.
Violent clashes between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks broke out in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh on June 11, lasting several days and spreading to neighboring Jalalabad region. Official figures say 214 were killed in the clashes and more than 2,000 were injured, however, Kyrgyz leaders admit that the real death toll could be 10 times higher.
