President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek has called on the Belarusian authorities to carry out a full and transparent investigation into the death of a Belarusian opposition journalist.

Bebenin, the founder of opposition Khartia'97 (Charter'97) news portal, was found hanged on Friday in his country house close to the capital, Minsk. Investigators believe the 36-year-old journalist had committed suicide, but Bebenin's colleagues have rejected the finding.

The Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office has pledged to study all possible causes of the journalist's death.

The Khartia'97 website quoted Buzek as saying Bebenin had been fighting for a "more democratic Belarus."

The late journalist will be buried in Minsk on Monday afternoon.
