The personnel of the Black Sea Fleet gathered in downtown Sevastopol on Thursday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Kursk nuclear submarine tragedy.

The Russian nuclear submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000, following an onboard torpedo explosion, killing all 118 crewmembers.

There were 22 Sevastopol residents among the crew of the sunken vessel.

The fleet's officials laid flowers to the memorial dedicated to the deceased Kursk crewmembers and extended their condolences to their relatives.

The Russian Navy has improved safety and rescue techniques since the sinking of the Kursk and has focused on saving crewmembers of accident-hit submarines.
