An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred on Sunday off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website.

The epicenter of the quake, registered at 05:56 a.m. local time (19:56 GMT on Saturday), was 65 kilometers (40 miles) to the west of the city of Banda Aceh in the Sumatra province.

There have been no reports of victims or damage, and no tsunami warning has been issued so far.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where continental plates meet and cause high volcanic and seismic activity. It has more active volcanoes than any other country in the world.

A tsunami, which was triggered by an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck the coast of western Sumatra in October, killing over 300 people.

In December 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people across South East Asia.
