An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred early Thursday near Japan's Ogasawara archipelago, following a series of over 70 tremors in the region in the past 30 hours, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of all the quakes lies approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) to the west of the Chichi-jima island at the depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

There have been no reports of victims or damage in the aftermath of the most recent quake, and no tsunami warning has been issued so far.

The most powerful quake jolted the region a day earlier, when a 7.4-magnitude tremor triggered a brief tsunami alert.

Japan is located in one of the world's most quake-prone regions. Over 20 percent of the tremors in this part of the Pacific register magnitudes of 6 and more.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake in the port city of Kobe in 1995 killed at least 6,400 people and left over 300,000 residents without homes.
