Rescuers have found a survivor of Japan's earthquake eight days after the disaster, followed by a devastating tsunami, hit coastal areas in the northeast of the country, Japan's NHK television reported on Saturday.

The man was rescued from a wrecked house in the town of Kesennuma in Miyagi prefecture, and he is in a stable physical condition, NHK said citing military sources.

A massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and powerful tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11 leaving at least 18,000 people dead or missing. Hundreds of thousands have been left homeless.

According to NHK, rescue workers continue the search for survivors despite cold weather and heavy snowfalls in areas affected by the natural disaster.
