CIS summit opens on the Volga

KAZAN, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - A Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit opened Friday in Kazan, the capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan on the Volga.

The summit, chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin, comprises all the CIS leaders, except for Turkmenistan, which will be represented by Deputy Prime Minister Aganiyaz Akyev. The meetings will be held behind closed doors.

The summit will focus on the reform of the CIS agencies, the election of a new chairman of the CIS Council of Heads of State, and cooperation between CIS member states on youth activities.
