NEW YORK, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told his counterpart from Serbia and Montenegro Tuesday that there is no alternative to the "Europeanization" of the Balkans, a ministry spokesman said.
"This means, first of all, that it is necessary to provide complete protection for ethnic minorities in Kosovo and maintain current state boundaries adjacent with Albania and Macedonia, no matter what the outcome of the referendum [on the fate of Serbia and Montenegro] may be," Mikhail Kamynin said.
According to the spokesman, the ministers said they would do everything possible to follow the recommendations of the world community, including the UN.
"They stressed that the UN and its Security Council must play a key role in the Kosovo settlement," Kamynin said.
