MOSCOW, December 16 (RIA Novosti) - More than 31,000 people were killed in road accidents in Russia in January-November, a spokesman for the Department of Traffic Security said Friday.
"During the first 11 months of 2005, Russia saw 203,777 road accidents and 31,093 fatalities," the spokesman said.
According to the department's press service, the road situation remains problematic although the death toll declined by 2.2% from last year.
The Central and Volga federal districts account for most of the accidents, recording 97,830 cases.
"Moscow, the Vologda Region [northwestern Russia] and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area [the Urals] hold the lead in all categories of road accidents," the spokesman said.
In general, the number of road accidents and victims caused by traffic violations declined by 5.5% year-on-year.
